Artists Profile

 

Patricia Hurl’s work spans the disciplines of painting, multi-media and collaborative art practice. 

She was a member of Temple Bar Gallery and Studios from 1986 – ’09. leaving in 2009 to move to Co. Tipperary, where she set up Silverbarn Studios with artist and partner Therry Rudin. 

After Art College (DIT) in 1983 she has shown regularly in selected group and solo shows and has represented Ireland in symposiums in Atlanta USA, Caversham, S.A. and Zaragossa Spain. She was a contributor to The Great Book of Ireland. Her work is included in the  recent publication, RIA of Artists of 20th Century Art. 

 

For the past number of years she has worked in collaboration with Therry, and they are currently working on a new body of performance/video/ texts on of subject of folk narrative, which was developed in SIM artist’s residency in Reykjavik in September 2012. 

In May of 2014, as part of the Bealtine Festival, Patricia and Therry were selected to participate in ‘Catch the He(art)’, a travelling residency, with four artists over 55 years,  which examined the struggle to maintain one’s  practice in later life. This was conducted through talks and seminars, in the Dublin, Bray, Kilkenny and ending with an exhibition in the Galway Arts Centre. 

 

Patricia has received several awards for art practice including: 

 

  • 1916 Commemorative award for Art Project (Military Manoeuvres). (2016)
  • She was awarded a sabbatical (salary stipend),from the Department of Fine Art DIT, to pursue her art practice.(2001)  
  • Major Arts Council Bursary for an Individual (1993),
  • GPA Award for Emerging Artists (1988) 
  • Norah McGuinness Award for Painting (1983). 
  • From 2000-‘06 she developed a number of Community programmes and Student residencies with the local community. In Portland Row, Dublin.  She also developed an Arts in Context module in Women’s Studies Through the Medium of Art  - and by popular demand, a similar Gender Studies Through Art, as a 3rd year elective, as part of the BA in Fine Art.

  • Elliptical Affinities, Irish Women Artists and the Politics of the Body Invited Artist. Highlane Gallery. Curated by Fionna Barber and Aoifa Ruane. (2019-’20)

 

  • Damer House Gallery, Invited artist, ‘Loop Film Festival ‘ Barcelona. La Place Gallery. (2018). Representing eight artists from our annual Film Festival, Homeland, Damer House Gallery (2017/18/19). 

 

  • Bealtine: ‘Shooting from the Hip’ a Participative Postcard Project, facilitated in collaboration with Therry Rudin. Damer House Gallery (2016).

 

  • Dog-Days’, Invited Curator (in collaboration with Therry Rudin). An open 

submission show,  Dunamaise Arts Centre , Portlaoise, (2016),

 

  • Military Manoeuvres,  a live re-enactment of a famous painting from the National Gallery Collection. Commissioned by the Arts Council, as part of the 1916 Centenary Commemorative Celebrations. (2016).

 

  • Damer House Gallery : Therry and I Co-Directed  this  new not –for-profit,

            artist -led, contemporary art-space in Damer House, Roscrea Heritage Centre. 

Designing, curating, and producing around 40 shows, seven seminars, many workshops and artists talks over this 6 years which we worked on it. We also took part in Bealtine every May with the Active Retirement in the town, and in 2019 we featured with Alice Hanratty and Michael Kane, two renowned artists in their 80’s. We both acknowledge this as part of our practice from the years - 2013-2019. 

 

  • Bád (Boat), invited artist. Group Show curated by artist FXMurphy. Damer House Gallery (2016).

 

  • Catch the He(art), An Arts Council travelling residency,part of the Bealtine Festival, in celebration of creativity in older age. (2015)

          Participatory and Arts in Context Projects: 

 

  • The Laundry Project, six weeks residency in the old disused laundry in St. Finbarrs Hospital as part of the Cultural Capital events (2005)

 

  • Bauntlieve, Shifting Ground, an International art project with artists from Ireland, Switzerland, Hungary, Russia and the U.K. This formed part of the Ground -Up research programme  which explored issues within contemporary art practice in rural contexts, Co.Clare. (2003-‘07)
